1786 New Jersey copper 1/2p, M17-b, W4870, PLUKIBUS Reverse, R3. This is a very sharp and attractive example that grades EF40. Very nice dark tan brown color, with particularly bold definition in the horse's hair and the interior shield. This example is struck on a "small, dumpy planchet" as opposed to the larger planchets that this variety is also known to be struck on. The naked eye appeal is quite attractive, but there are some small patches of black pitting on the obverse that would most likely prevent this coin from grading at PCGS. The sharpness and great color, plus a readable date and a strong PLUKIBUS error, make this coin very pleasing in hand. My EAC grade is EF40 net VF25. From the Furnace Run collection, purchased on eBay in 2007 for $1075.
