Description
Pedigree from the Early Cents Auctions Houston Money Show sale part 1, sold on 01/17/25 as lot #121 and described as: “1787 Connecticut Miller 7-I R6 MBL, the "Hercules Head," NGC graded VF20. Glossy chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are numerous fine planchet striations and voids, mostly on the obverse, plus an obvious rim dent at the shoulder and a scratch on the cheek. The reverse is much more attractive with a vertical void through the outstretched arm being the only significant mark. Much sharper than the Perkins and Taylor examples. The bottom of the date is off the planchet but the remainder is strong. Not perfect but not at all bad for this popular "Redbook" type. The attribution and Long Island Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label.” The coin sold for $1,920 to me, which is less than the $2,160 that it brought in the Heritage sale of the Long Island Collection on 05/04/22 as lot #3047. Heritage described the coin there as: “1787 Connecticut Copper, VF20. Hercules Head, Miller 7-I. 1787 Connecticut Copper, Mailed Bust Left, Hercules Head, M. 7-I, W-2830, R.6, VF20 NGC. Ex: Long Island Collection. The 1787 "Hercules Head" Guide Book variety is Miller 7-I and no other, though three 1786 die marriages share the same obverse die. The 1787 Hercules Head is much rarer than its 1786 counterpart, since the 1786 Miller 5.3-N is plentiful. This medium-brown example was produced on a typical planchet for the variety, with a few moderate flaws on each side. Both sides are misaligned toward 7 o'clock, with the bottom of the date off the flan. Listed on page 59 of the 2022 Guide Book. From The Long Island Collection, Part III.” I believe this is the only 7-I that I have owned, and I know that finding a better example will be quite challenging. NGC certification# 6061902-010, with “1787 ‘Hercules” Connecticut Miller 7-I Long Island Collection” listed on the label.
