Description
1787 Connecticut Copper, M32.5-aa, W3260, INDE Over FUDE = FNDE, R4. This is a nearly choice glossy tan brown example with FINE+ details, smooth surfaces, and excellent eye appeal. The Whitman colonial book speculates "The engraver thought he was working on a Fugio copper, then corrected his error." This example is usually seen in low grades, in fact the Newman coin was just NGC F15 and sold for $822.50 on 05/16/14 as lot #30111. I believe that example is slightly sharper than this coin, but I do like my surfaces and glossy tan color better! The most recent sale is the Heritage / Donald Partrick / James Blake example, graded as NGC VF25, which sold for $2640 in Patrick's sale and then $2280 in the Blake sale on 09/05/23 - sure makes this coin look like a bargain! Purchased from Larry Briggs at St. Charles MNS show on 07/23/22.
