Description
From the Earlycoppercoins PCGS Registry Set. From the Stacks Bowers sale of the E PLURIBUS UNUM collection on 11/11/20, where this coin was lot# 4094 and was described as: “1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 9-R, W-2860. Rarity-4+. Mailed Bust Left, IND, 1787 over 1788. EF-45 (PCGS). 125.0 grains. One of the most fascinating of all Connecticut varieties, using the anomalous reverse legend IND ET LIB and showing a fascinating naked-eye overdate. Nice deep steel brown with some shallow and scattered surface verdigris intermingled with glossy and relatively smooth surfaces, likely indicative of a ground provenance. Nicely struck and well centered, with some degree of visible denticles everywhere but the left side of the reverse. The shield details are complete and show exceptional boldness. The planchet is a bit crude through NEC of CONNEC and another smaller planchet fissure is seen on the obverse portrait’s forehead. This unusually sharp example shows all of this distinctive variety’s characteristics boldly. From the E Pluribus Unum Collection. Provenance: From the E Pluribus Unum Collection.” The coin sold for $2,640 in that auction, and has a current PCGS Price Guide value of $3,750. For the M9-R, PCGS has graded a total of three coins: a clearly superior AU53; this coin at EF45; and an EF40. For the non-Miller designation for 1787/1788, PCGS has also graded an EF45+ and another EF45. So regardless, this EF45 example should be one of the top-6 coins graded by PCGS. Certification# 686415.45/40482166, with “Mailed Bust Left, M 9-R” listed on the PCGS label. I purchased this coin from RUATWIN at ANA OKC on 08/21/25.
