1788 Massachusetts Copper Cent, Ryder 11-C, W6290, Period After Massachusetts, R5. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as EF40, and this is a near-miss on the perfect intersection of rare variety and rare nice condition. The color is an incredible glossy peanut butter tan brown, but the obverse shows some as-struck planchet flaws that deflate this example from CHOICE status. The reverse is flawless in terms of surfaces but the final 8 in the date is faint at best. This is a somewhat harder to locate R5 variety, and the color, surfaces, and eye appeal were certainly nice enough for PCGS to assign the EF40 grade. Ex-CVM 2014; Furnace Run collection. REDUCED FROM $1250 TO $999.
