 Description
1793 C1 Liberty Cap half cent, smooth bust line, R3+. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as F12, and CAC-certified as a CHOICE example. This coin was lot #175 in the Stacks auction of 11/15/11, where it was described as: "Deep golden tan with exceptional in-hand eye appeal for the grade. Choice surfaces with far fewer marks than typically associated with the grade, even under low magnification. HALF CENT weak and barely legible due to strike, all other details bold for the grade with portions of the beaded rim device visible, especially on the reverse. From the first year of coinage at the newly opened Philadelphia Mint, and a classic half cent issue of the highest order--everyone needs one for a type set, as it is the only year of its design type with head of Liberty and cap to left. Just 35,334 examples were forthcoming from the fledgling Mint's presses. One of four recognized die pairs for the date with the present variety, Cohen-1, exhibiting a period after AMERICA in the reverse legend. There are probably more potential buyers for an affordable and pleasing '93 half cent at the Fine-12 level, as offered here, than for the same date in high-grade AU or finer, so please bear in mind the probable degree of competition if you mean to be a successful bidder on this lot." Glossy medium chocolate brown with original color and bold details, aside from weak central reverse details which is due to the Manley 2.0 die state. Very nice for the grade and variety. The "Cohen 1" attribution and "Furnace Run Collection" pedigree are each listed on the PCGS label. Ex-Tom Reynolds March 2001; MHS Collection; Stacks 1/15/11:175:$8625; David Johnson 05/06/12; Shawn A. Yancey #9826; Furnace Run Collection 05/09/12. Without exception, my coins are sharper and more attractive in hand than in my photos. So if you like the photos, you will LOVE the coin!
