| 1795 C6a Liberty Cap Half Cent, Plain Edge No Pole, R2. This was lot #133 in the Goldberg's Davy auction on 09/04/11, where it realized $483. The coin itself is a raw VG8 with very faint, shallow hairlines on the reverse, EAC net G5. The real appeal of this coin is that it is a major mint error, being DOUBLE-STRUCK. The second strike was slightly offset, and it is most visible at AMERICA on the reverse. The color is a nice medium brown, and the date is faint but fully visible. Basically, this coin is priced as a type coin with no premium for the error, and although errors seem to be common in "Davy" auctions, they are still quite rare out in the wild! |
