1803 C4 Draped Bust half cent, R4. This is the front-line example for the Furnace Run PCGS Registry Set of US half cents from 1793 to 1857 by Cohen Variety. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as VF25. Sharp original with dark glossy chocolate brown color. The most notable signs of circulation are some album slide marks that cross the cheek horizontally, plus a very shallow hairline extending vertically upward from the bust tip. Strong details and good eye appeal, pretty decent for this tougher R4 variety. This variety features only one die state; BUT this example has the reverse rotated 145deg CCW to K7: could this be G. Maas #638 referenced in the Manley book? There is an old light blue envelope that comes with the coin, with lots of stuff written on both sides, including Madcoins, 218.76, Don Valenziano, Ebay, 03/25/01, 1223 245 675, VF30. Not sure how that all fits together but with that much pedigree going on, perhaps somebody can find the Maas catalog and see if this is that coin? Regardless, this coin was purchased from Ricky Gross in 2006; Furnace Run Collection. Without exception, my coins are sharper and more attractive in hand than in my photos. So if you like the photos, you will LOVE the coin!
