1803 S-264 R4+ Draped Bust Large Cent PCGS VG F12 net G6 New Cumberland Collection

NCC-286: 1803 S-264 Draped Bust, Large Date Small Fraction, R4+, PCGS VG Details, EAC F12 net G6.  Authenticated and graded by PCGS as VG Details Repaired.  I argue for fully FINE details, with everything full and bold including the Large Date and Small Fraction features.  The color is an attractive glossy medium brown and the overall eye appeal is very positive.  Second glance reveals that the surfaces have been lightly smoothed along the upper right obverse rim from K12 to K5.  Too bad, because otherwise this would be an exceptional example that would certainly be among the top dozen for this MAJOR Redbook and Sheldon variety.  As it stands here, my EAC grade is F12 net G6 and Average Minus, not because of color, detail, or eye appeal, but because of the purposeful smoothing.  PCGS Genuine Repaired VG Detail Sheldon-264 New Cumberland Collection #36410.98/47094244.  Ex-D&S Coins via Doug Bird on 08/27/03 for $8,100.
