1803 S248 Draped Bust large cent, Small Date Small Fraction, R4. An under-rated variety that feels a bit more difficult than R4 - in fact I show that I have only offered THREE low grade examples in the past 20 years. This example has been authenticated and graded by NGC as VF20BN, and it's a gorgeous, original, chocolate brown example. The EAC grade should be at least F15 but most standards, and there are only minor circulation marks commensurate with the grade. The hair definition is nearly full, as are the rims, and the reverse retains plenty of details in the leaf ribbing. Overall just a really nice example for this tougher variety, certainly the nicest S248 I have ever handled. Easily attributable by the mumps obverse and the die crack through the top of AMERICA on the reverse, and the S248 attribution is listed on the NGC label. Purchased from Doug Strain at the Tyler TX Coin Show on 06/22/19. Without exception, my coins are sharper and more attractive in person than in my photos, so if you like the photos, you will LOVE the coin!
