Description
1824/2 N-1 Coronet Large Cent, Overdate, PCGS AU58 CAC, R1. Well-pedigreed, including the Early Cents Auction of the Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth collection, sold on 09/02/22 as lot #84 and described as: “1824/2 N-1 R1 Overdate 4 over 2 PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Frosty medium steel brown with golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. Smooth and nearly flawless showing only light friction on the devices. The fields and protected areas are lustrous. The only notable marks are a faint hairline scratch from the right side of the eye to the cheek right of the upper lip and a small nick or chip right of the nostril. Neither mark is significant and this cent has excellent eye appeal. MDS with a couple light die cracks on the obverse but no crumbling in the dentils. The overdate feature is obvious. Graded AU50 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #28991. Our grade is AU50. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. Certificate #36778.58/25247556. Ex Tony Terranova-Douglas F. Bird 9/1991-Wesley A. Rasmussen, Heritage Auctions 1/13/2005:3482-Colonel Ellsworth Collection.” The coin sold for $16,200 here then sold again the following year at Heritage on 02/27/23 as lot #53277, described as: “1824/2 N-1 Cent, AU58. Ex: Terranova-Bird-Rasmussen-Ellsworth. 1824/2 1C N-1, R.1, AU58 PCGS. CAC. Ex: COL Ellsworth Collection. Noyes Die State C/C. N-1 and N-5 are the two 1824/2 varieties, and they are readily distinguished since N-1 is always cracked across most of the reverse periphery. N-1 is available in well-worn condition, but Borderline Uncirculated examples are both rare and desirable. The present cent displays golden-brown luster in design recesses. The fields and high points are gunmetal-gray. An unobtrusive thin horizontal field mark near the nose provides an identifier. In the Noyes Census as AU50 and CC#9. N-1 Population: 2 in 58, 6 finer (1/23). Ex Tony Terranova; Douglas F. Bird (9/1991); Wes Rasmussen Collection (Heritage Auctions, 1/2005), lot 3482; Colonel Ellsworth Collection.” The coin brought $11,400 in the Ellsworth auction; now offered here at $12,500. PCGS certification# 36778.58/25247556.
