Description
1835 N-8 Coronet Large Cent, Head of 1836, PCGS MS64RB CAC, R1. From the Early Cents Auction of the Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection, sold on 09/02/22 as lot #187 and described as: “1835 N-8 R1 Head of 1836 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Glossy light olive and steel brown with at least 10% of the bright mint red remaining on the obverse and more than a third of the original red showing on the reverse. The only notable marks are a small spot of reddish brown toning on the front edge of the neck, a faint streak of darker toning slanting down into the field from the coronet, and a speck of dark toning under the left side of the O in OF. This cent has great eye appeal. MDS with a strong die crack up from the dentils through the 1 in the date along the bust and neck to the back of the ear, then weakly up through the head to the bottom point of star 8 where it fades away. Called MS64 by Bland. Our grade is MS63. A very nice cent that is clearly in the condition census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. Certificate #37061.64/24843204. Ex Dennis Mendelson (who found it at a coin show in Chicago 11/1962)-Del-Bland-Dr. Philip W. Ralls-Ralls Estate, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/26/2014:782-Colonel Ellsworth Collection.” So when reviewing the Ellsworth catalog, this is one of the few coins that got a WOW designation from me in my notes. We bid up to $4,2000 hammer for this coin but we were shut out by a final gavel at $6,000 = $7,200 all-in. But like a few other coins in this collection, this gorgeous coin came back our way! Although CVM did not win this coin in the SKE auction, I was able to purchase it from him later on 05/13/24 as my stock #13319. Located in the Noyes-Lusk Numistudy census as #24099 graded MS60 net MS60 Ave Plus, tied at CC4-5. PCGS certification# 37061.64/28432404.
