Description
1856 Judd-177 Braided Hair half cent, Proof Essay / Trial Piece, R5. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as PR64, and also CAC-certified as choice for the assigned grade. This proof has bold mirrors on each side, and the color attests to the essay status of this variety. This variety receives an entire page in the Cohen half cent book (Page 123), which states the coin was 72g instead of 84g, and 88% copper and 12% nickel. Cohen also states that only 50 pieces were supposed to have been struck, and that the variety is currently R5 with an estimated survivorship of 30 coins. This is the first one of these that I have owned!
