Description
From the Earlycoppercoins PCGS Registry Set. From the Stacks Bowers sale of 03/26/24, lot #3109, where it was described as: “1772 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 5-72A, W-7710. Rarity-6. GEORGIVS III, Group I. Fine-12 (PCGS). 105.2 grains. A pleasing example of this rare variety, glossy golden-olive-brown with good eye appeal for the grade. A smattering of fine marks are noted, little rim bruise at base of bust, another smaller one atop reverse, rim nick at 4 o'clock on reverse too. Reverse aligned to 11 o'clock, AN soft. Not perfect, but quite pleasing as it is. The Ringo coin was only a little sharper and the Vlack coin was roughly equivalent in terms of detail. Provenance: From our sale of the Ted L. Craige Collection, November 2012 Baltimore Auction, lot 6297; Heritage's sale of the Poulos Family Collection, Part II, September 2019 Long Beach Signature Auction, lot 4522.” In that Heritage auction from 2019, this coin was graded as PCGS F15 #939.15/26886841 and sold for $1,260. In this 2024 Stacks Bowers sale, the coin is now PCGS F12 #939.12/48177818, and it sold for just $960 to CVM. Not sure why the coin was down-graded, but I suspect it got re-holdered into a Gold Shield holder so that it would receive a PCGS photograph? I purchased the coin from CVM on 02/22/25, and was fortunate enough to upgrade this example to a VF30 in May 2025. A beautiful example for this date and this grade and price. The current PCGS Price Guide is $3,250, so I am offering this premium example at $1999 before discounts - make sure you SIGN IN to see net pricing!
