1786 New Jersey 1/2p, M17-b, W4870, PLUKIBUS variety, R3. This coin has been authenticated and graded by PCGS as VF2, and it's a very attractive albeit imperfect example for the grade. Rich dark chocolate brown color with some peanut butter than brown highpoints. There are some minor circulation marks on each side, the most notable of which is in the upper reverse field, plus the rims show some minor bumps mostly on the obverse. The date is faint yet fully readable, and the PLUKIBUS error is plain to the naked eye. Overall a very pleasing and suitable example of this major Redbook variety. I can't piece the entire pedigree together, but here is what I CAN see: Scott Barnes collection; C4 10/12/96 lot 18; unknown; C4 11/21/09 lot 2009; unknown; CVM to Furnace Run collection 2015; to Shawn A. Yancey 06/12/23. Comes with several envelopes and auction inserts, which state that this is clearly a large planchet example at 30mm wide and 130.7 gns. And I see a Bob Grellman white auction insert that grades the coin as VF25 net VF20 - PCGS and I both agree with that assessment! The PCGS label reads "Maris 17-b, Chess Knight, PLUKIBUS."
