1787 N9-T Fugio Cent PCGS VF35 STATES UNITED 4 Cinq W6770 R5+

From the Furnace Run Fugio Cent Collection, 106 coins, 53 different varieties!  Offered by Shawn A. Yancey from Earlycoppercoins: 1787 N9-T Fugio Cent PCGS VF35 STATES UNITED 4 Cinquefoils W6770 R5+.  From the Stacks Bowers auction of 03/24/21, where this example was lot #1496 and described as: “1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. Newman 9-T, W-6770. Rarity-6. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. VF-35 (PCGS).  An unusually nice example of this elusive variety, likely at or near Condition Census level for these dies. Rob Retz considered this second finest known, trailing the Boyd-Ford coin that showed extremely fine granularity and surfaces which were "dark brown, verging on black in color." The Newman coin, graded NGC AU-58 CAC, is clearly the best of these now. It brought $7343 in 2014. This example is mostly light brown, with surfaces that are smooth and largely show good gloss. The centering is excellent, and the typical die crack is seen on the reverse through the ring at 7:00. An area of trivially darker toning at the right side of the sundial is noted, along with a short scratch below the sundial face and some very minor fissures here and there. Few variety collectors own this number in anything close to Very Fine, and this example would upgrade most.”  The coin sold for $1,980 in that 2021 auction, and was purchased subsequently on eBay.  PCGS certification# 883.35/85169920.
