1787 New Jersey Copper 1/2p M56-n W5310 Camel Head PCGS VF20 Stuck Over CT

From the Stacks Baltimore Winter Expo internet auction of 11/20/23, where this coin was lot #8196 and listed at 174.35 grains with a provenance to the Rancocas Creek Collection.  Prior pedigree includes the Stacks auction in October 2018, where this coin was lot #6230 and described as: “1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 56-n, W-5310. Rarity-1. Camel Head--Overstruck on a Connecticut Copper--VF-20 (PCGS).  74.24 grains. A medley of hazelnut, olive-green, and russet tones paints the complexion of this lovely Camel Head. The surfaces are well composed and glossy, exhibiting just a trivial porosity visible at the lower reverse border. Pleasantly bold for the type and overstruck on a Connecticut copper, with AUCTORI clearly showing through at the left obverse border.  Provenance: From the Cohasco Collection of Colonials formed by Sir Philip H. Snyder, circa 1963-68.”  In the 2018 auction, the coin was in a different holder, and that PCGS VF20 label #515.20/35911821 remains with the coin, along with some notes suggesting that this coin was struck over CT M33.49 (W4045) but you will have to prove that for yourself!  This coin realized $504 in 2018 and just $432 this year 2023.  Housed in a newer PCGS Gold Shield holder with "Camel Head Maris 56-n" listed on the label.
