Description
1788 M75-bb New Jersey Copper, Running Fox, W5520, R4, ex-Newman. From the Heritage auction on 11/03/17, where this coin was lot #15316 and described as: “1788 New Jersey Copper, VF30. Running Fox, Maris 75-bb. 1788 NJERSY New Jersey Copper, Running Fox, Maris 75-bb, W-5520, R.4, VF30 NGC. Die alignment: 180°. A mid-grade example of the Running Fox type, named after the mysterious animal seen to the left of the reverse legend. The horse's head and plow are clear and distinct, as is the date; the left margins of the obverse feature extensive cracking as seen on all examples. The fields have some scattered marks and a bit of roughness, but nothing distracting. The dark brown coloration is typical for this die variety. Listed on page 73 of the 2018 Guide Book. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.” This coin sold for just $1,200 in that sale as NGC VF30 but now resides in a PCGS XF Details holder. The Newman envelope and Heritage auction sticker remain with the coin, but the NGC VF30 sticker does NOT. On the other hand, there is a way-cool hand-written circular insert apparently from Hays as a nice bonus! Anyway, this example is actually very decent in person, with glossy dark chocolate brown color and bold details. Both sides are incredibly sharp including a bold date on the obverse, and the all-important Running Fox on the reverse is particularly bold. The reverse also features nearly full definition within the shield. The surfaces have just a hint of roughness which did not bother NGC but did bother PCGS. Overall a pretty decent example, one that I would be satisfied with if I did not already have a slightly better example. Taken in trade as a Registry Set collector’s duplicate at EAC Charlotte on 05/01/26. PCGS certification# 783095.97/38788402 with “Running Fox, Maris 75-bb” on the label.
