1794 C-4a Liberty Cap Half Cent Low Relief Head Small Edge Letters PCGS VF30 Widok Collection

From the Rod Widok collection, sold by Goldberg’s on 06/03/20 as lot #11, and described as: “1794 C-4a R3 Small Edge Letters. PCGS graded VF-30. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and attractive showing only a few trivial contact marks including a pair of small, light rim nicks on the right side of the obverse. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0, with an obvious bulge in the field at the bottom of the cap but without the radial die crack to the top of the M in AMERICA. The usual die state for this variety and very nice for the grade. Our grade is F12+. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 11 finer. (PCGS # 35036) Estimated Value $1,500 – UP.  Ex Bowers & Merena 6/23/86:2542-Don Valenziano 11/16/1988-The Widok Collection (includes the B & M lot ticket).  Realized $2,520.”  Since that original appearance, the coin has been sold TWICE by David Lawrence RC: once on 08/09/20 for $3,000, and again on 11/14/21 for $6,000.  The current PCGS Price Guide is $5,750 for this variety and certification#, so I think $5,999 is an appropriate asking price for this “Plus” coin.  PCGS certification# 35036.30/37281449, with “C-4a Sm Edge Letters Widok Collection” on the label.  Note that the dark glossy peanut butter brown color is more accurately represented in MY photos; the coin is NOT as dark as the PCGS photo suggests.
