NCC-037: 1794 S-33 Liberty Cap, Head of 1794, Wheelspoke, R6, Noyes #61965 G6 net FR2. This is the Eugene Exman example, sold by Heritage on 06/04/15 as lot #3759, where it was described as: “1794 Cent, Head of '94, Good Details. Rare S-33 Die Pairing, 'Wheel Spoke' Reverse. 1794 1C Head of 1794, S-33, B-19, R.6 -- Repaired -- NGC Details. Good. Our EAC Grade Fair 2. The right obverse field and portrait are extensively smoothed; the remainder of the obverse and the entire reverse are heavily granular, preventing positive identification of the die state, although the advancement of cracks is at least Breen's Die State IV. All known examples of this variety are extensively circulated, and most show other impairments. This auburn-brown example retains clear legends and the central motifs are boldly outlined. Sharpness at least Good 4, but rated Fair 2 because of the surface roughness. Bill Noyes also called this piece Fair 2, but rated the sharpness Good 5. Del Bland offers a slightly more generous assessment of AG3, understandable given the clarity of the legends.” The coin realized $6,462.50 in the Exman sale, and eventually ended up with CVM who sold it to me for the New Cumberland Collection. This is a known example that is recorded by Noyes in the Numistudy V6 condition census as coin #61965, where it is graded G6 net FR2 Scudzy, and CC#30 out of 31 recorded examples. Once again, I don’t agree with Noyes’ Scudzy designation. Having the coin in hand, it certainly seems to have at least VG details, and it is not ugly by any means, so my EAC grade would be VG7 net AG3 and Minus. Offered here at a pittance more than its last auction appearance in 2015. Ex-Robert Moore; Eugene Exman; Heritage 06/04/15:3759:$6,462.50; unknown; CVM; Shawn A. Yancey 01/12/17.
