Description
1835 N-5 Coronet Large Cent, Head of 1834 with Small 8 & Stars, PCGS MS65BN CAC, R2. Another Naftzger example, sold by Goldberg’s in 2009 as lot #316, and described as: “1835 N-5 R2 PCGS graded MS65BN. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Head of 1834 with Small 8 and Stars. Lustrous light chocolate and bluish steel blending to light olive on the obverse. Slightly faded mint red covers the protected areas on both sides, about 10% of the reverse showing some of the original color. The only defect is a small splash of darker toning on the right bottom of the N in ONE. Nicely struck E-MDS with a strong double profile (from die bounce) extending from the top of the coronet down to the bottom of the chin. The doubling is bold and can be seen at arm’s length making this a great example of the minting anomaly. The fine die crack through the base of the 835 is clear. Called MS60+ and tied for CC#9 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS61 and tied for CC#3, his photo #21569. Our grade is MS63. PCGS Population 2; 1 finer in 66BN. Ex Anderson Dupont, Stack’s 9/24/54:739-Herbert Oeschner, Stacks 9/8/88:135-Tony Terranova 9/26/88.” Note that I have Numistudy, and the Noyes photo #21569 does NOT match this coin. Not even close. If Noyes graded the coin by using that incorrect photo, then I can see how he landed on MS61 while Grellman appropriately landed on MS63, with which I agree. Looks like CAC agrees, too, assigning their green sticker to the PCGS MS65BN assessment. Not sure who purchased this coin from the REN sale, but it ended up in The Chiro Collection via Legend Coins. “N-5 Sm 8 Sm Stars Naftzger Collection” is listed on the PCGS label. PCGS Price Guide says $7,750 for non-CAC coins, so we are offering this CAC beauty at $8,500. PCGS certification# 37084.65/13086959.
