1872 2C Two Cent Piece GEM PCGS PR66RD RED CAC ex-Heritage & Legend

An absolutely GEM example, highly admired in it's last two appearances.  The first was the Heritage auction on 06/14/18, where this coin was lot #3822 and described as: “1872 Two Cent Piece, PR66 Red.  Outstanding Example for Registry Collections.  1872 2C PR66 Red PCGS Secure. CAC. PCGS has certified only a single Cameo example of the 1872 proof two cent piece (that coin in PR64+) making high-end Red non-Cameos arguably the finest available for collectors. This CAC-endorsed Premium Gem is conditionally rare, and displays mirrored fields and rich coppery-orange color. A single finer Red coin is known at both services combined.”  The second and most recent appearance was the Legend auction on 04/15/21, where it was lot #247 and described as: "A virtually FLAWLESS GEM that is a world class Set Registry contender. Among the FINEST in the RD category, PCGS has seen just two graded finer.  Bold, beaming mirrors have a brilliant, reflective flash that brings out the stunning original mint red color. The surfaces are essentially pristine with just a few minor traces of red iridescent toning at the rims. The sharply struck up devices stand out, though the frost is not thick enough to warrant a Cameo designation. These are very rare so fine especially with such great color and looks!  Only 950 Proofs were struck. PCGS 15, NGC 8, CAC 5. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $7,250 and this coin realized $7,200 in 2018. Only two are graded finer, including the Simpson coin, graded PR67 RD that sold for $45,600 in November 2020.
