From Spink’s UK auction #24125 on 03/26/25, lot #1128, and described as: “Sicily, Syracuse, Deinomenid Tyranny, temp. Hieron I (c. 475-470 BC), AR Tetradrachm, charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving slow quadriga right, Nike flying right above, crowning horses with wreath, rev. head of Arethusa right, hair in bunch, wearing pearled hair-tie, earrings, and necklace, four dolphins around, (Boehringer 323 (V158/R226); SNG ANS -; Randazzo 495 (same dies); McClean 2614 (same dies)), softening to details typical of type, light tone, about very fine. Provenance: Classical Numismatic Group, Mail Bid Sale XXIII, 13 October 1992, lot 96.” I purchased this coin as a raw VF example and submitted it to NGC Ancients, who grades the coin as CH F Strike 4/5 Surface 4/5, certification# 8232870-006. I have more than a half-dozen Syracuse Tet's for sale right now, but this one is my FAVORITE! And I do agree with Spink's that this coin is truly a VF!
